NFTY Michigan Gun Violence Prevention Program and Resources

On Sunday, March 6th, NFTY Michigan teamed up with Not My Generation for a Gun Violence Prevention Program, held on Zoom.

This program was divided into three parts- grief, education, and action. Teens were invited to share their thoughts and feelings surrounding recent tragedy in our community, as well as how gun violence impacts our lives as students and as Jewish teens. We were very lucky to have NMG’s founder Kathryn Fleisher- a NFTY alum herself!- present as our adult mentor as we tried to learn more about gun violence and how to prevent it. She shared her own story and answered any questions participants had. We ended the program by writing letters to our representatives in Congress on this issue. After finding their respective representatives, teens were provided with resources to help them write these letters.

This program was a huge success- it was amazing to be partnered with Not My Generation and to have Kathryn there to answer questions and provide insight as we wrote our letters. Participants were engaged and had meaningful dialogue about their own experiences with mental health and safety surrounding the issue of gun violence. We are so grateful to everyone who shared their experiences and perspectives, and to everyone who was an active and respectful listener throughout the program!

This was our first program of 2022, and we can’t wait to see what the rest of the year has in store! You can keep up with us on Instagram and Facebook, and sign up for our Remind by texting @nftymi5782 to 81010.
